Solar Garden News!

July 9, 2021

“The community solar garden will reduce emissions and help keep rates affordable for our citizens and businesses. This project builds on our success with the Alternative Resource Energy Authority of affordably transitioning to renewable energy. Once complete, this project will push our share of municipally owned renewable energy to over 60 per cent from wind, hydro and solar.” Mayor Don Clarke

Yesterday, Mayor Clarke was in Mahone Bay for an exciting announcement regarding our Solar Garden Project, with AREA (Alternative Resource Energy Authority, a municipal clean energy corporation collectively owned by Mahone Bay, Antigonish and the Town of Berwick)

The Government of Canada is investing more than $8.9 million in this project through the Green Infrastructure Stream of the Investing in Canada infrastructure plan. The Government of Nova Scotia is contributing more than $7.4 million, while the municipalities are collectively contributing more than $5.9 million.

June 21 - National Indigenous Peoples Day

June 21st is National Indigenous People's Day.

The Town of Berwick acknowledges we are in Mi’kma’ki – the unceded territory and ancestral homeland of the Mi’kmaq Nation. Our relationship is based on a series of Peace and Friendship treaties between the Mi’kmaq Nation and the Crown, dating back to 1725. In Nova Scotia we recognize that We are All Treaty People.

This morning, we were invited to the opening of the Moving Through Medicine Garden, a project of the Annapolis Valley Regional Library located behind the Town of Berwick Town Hall.

Elder Lorraine Whitman performed a smudging ceremony and blessing of the Moving Through Gardens.
Following the ceremony, she was joined by Mayor Don Clarke to raise the Mi'kmaq Grand Council Flag in front of Town Hall.
